Physical Education

Physical Education at The Highcrest Academy is challenging, exciting and fun.

The Department is committed to providing opportunities for all pupils to develop a healthy, active lifestyle.

All pupils have the opportunity to perform and refine their skills, develop their tactical knowledge, problem solving skills and plan strategies during lessons and in games and matches. They are given opportunities to design sequences and motifs as well as evaluating their own and others’ performances.

The PE Department is well resourced to develop all areas of the PE curriculum. The Department offers a wide variety of extra- curricular clubs at competitive and non- competitive levels. Each year a variety of inter-house activities take place giving all pupils the opportunity to participate in competitive sport.

Pupils have the opportunity to compete at local, county, regional and national level in a variety of sports.

Key Stage 3:  

4 x 1 hour lessons per fortnight

Key Stage 4 (including Year 9s):  

3 x 1 hour lesson per fortnight

Key Stage 5: 

BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport (remove performance and excellence), 18 x 1 hour lessons per fortnight

Year 9 & 10 Summer Exam Revision Topics:

  • The structure and function of the skeletal system.
  • The structure and function of the muscular system.
  • The cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
  • Effects of exercise on body systems.

Key Stage 3

Physical Education at KS3 allows the students to develop their physical literacy, placing well-being and personal achievement at the core of the curriculum. Embedded across the curriculum are the school’s values and virtues.

Throughout Key Stage 3 pupils have four x 1 hour lessons per fortnight.

All pupils study a variety of:

  • Invasion Games
  • Net/Wall Games
  • Striking and Fielding Games
  • Gymnastics Activities
  • Athletics

KEY STAGE 4 (Including Year 9s)

The core PE Curriculum at KS4 continues to develop skills and tactical knowledge whilst focusing on the importance of how to develop and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.

The department offers OCR (9-1) GCSE PE which develops the students’ knowledge of anatomy and physiology, socio-cultural aspects of sport, as well as developing their technical and tactical knowledge of sport.

All students in Year 11 study Level 2 BTEC Tech Award in Sport, Activity and Fitness.

GCSE PE (OCR Exam Board):

  • 40% Practical: Including externally moderated performances in three different sports and a written Analysis and Evaluation of Performance.
  • 60% Theory: Applied Anatomy and Physiology, Physical Training, Socio-cultural influences, Sports Psychology, Health, Fitness and Well-being. Externally assessed through two one hour exams. 
  • Core PE: Three x 1-hour lessons per fortnight. Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of activities and to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.


The PE Department offers BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport. This course allows students to follow a vocational course which will equip them for university or apprenticeships or the world of work.

Students receive 18 x 1-hour lessons per fortnight.
